- 4 cups fresh blackberries (or frozen)
- 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, toss the blackberries with 1/2 cup sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla extract; let sit for 10 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, remaining 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
- Stir the milk and melted butter into the dry ingredients until just combined (lumps are okay).
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish without spreading it out too much.
- Spoon the blackberry mixture evenly over the top of the batter (do not stir).
- Bake for 45 to 50 minutes until the top is golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool for 10 minutes before serving warm.
Notes
- If using frozen blackberries, do not thaw them first to prevent the batter from becoming too purple.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream for the best experience.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
