Easy Homemade Brown Sugar Caramel Sauce: 5-Min Recipe

A rich, buttery, and velvety smooth homemade caramel sauce made with brown sugar. Perfect for drizzling over ice cream, pancakes, or using as a fruit dip, this recipe comes together in just minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional, to taste)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the packed brown sugar and unsalted butter. Stir gently until the butter melts and the mixture is smooth (about 2-3 minutes).
  2. Slowly pour in the heavy cream while continuing to stir. Be careful as the mixture may bubble up.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low. Simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently to thicken.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
  5. Let the sauce cool for a few minutes to thicken before transferring to a glass jar or heatproof container.

Notes

  • The sauce will thicken significantly as it cools.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  • To reuse, reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop.
  • For a thicker consistency, simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes beyond the recommended time.
