- 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 teaspoons instant yeast
- 1 and 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
- 1 tablespoon milk (for brushing on top)
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Stir well with a wooden spoon.
- Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the warm water and vegetable oil. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Shape the dough into a ball and place in a lightly greased bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Gently punch down the risen dough to release air. Flatten into a rectangle on a floured surface, then roll up tightly into a loaf shape, pinching the seams.
- Place the loaf seam-side down into a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan. Cover and let rise for 30 to 45 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F. Just before baking, brush the top of the loaf with milk.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped (internal temperature of 190°F).
- Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
Notes
- Ensure the water is between 105°F and 115°F; too hot will kill the yeast, too cold will not activate it.
- For a softer crust, brush the top with melted butter immediately after taking it out of the oven.
- Store in an airtight container for up to 3-5 days at room temperature.
- If using active dry yeast instead of instant, bloom it in the warm water and sugar first for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
