The Farmhouse Loaf: Mastering Amish White Bread Easy

A classic, soft, and slightly sweet Amish-style white bread with a golden crust, perfect for sandwiches, toasting, or enjoying fresh with butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 and 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for brushing on top)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Stir well with a wooden spoon.
  2. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the warm water and vegetable oil. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Shape the dough into a ball and place in a lightly greased bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Gently punch down the risen dough to release air. Flatten into a rectangle on a floured surface, then roll up tightly into a loaf shape, pinching the seams.
  6. Place the loaf seam-side down into a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan. Cover and let rise for 30 to 45 minutes.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Just before baking, brush the top of the loaf with milk.
  8. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped (internal temperature of 190°F).
  9. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • Ensure the water is between 105°F and 115°F; too hot will kill the yeast, too cold will not activate it.
  • For a softer crust, brush the top with melted butter immediately after taking it out of the oven.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3-5 days at room temperature.
  • If using active dry yeast instead of instant, bloom it in the warm water and sugar first for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
