Ghee’s Old-Fashioned Apple Pie: Best Classic Recipe

A timeless, classic apple pie recipe featuring a blend of tart apples, warm spices, and a touch of rich ghee for a flaky, golden crust and flavorful filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 to 8 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted ghee
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 package (14 ounces) refrigerated pie crusts
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Fit one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish, leaving an overhang.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, toss sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour. Let sit for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared crust, distributing evenly.
  4. Dot the top of the filling with small pieces of ghee and butter.
  5. Place the second pie crust over the filling. Seal and crimp the edges, and cut slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
  6. Whisk the egg and milk together and brush the mixture over the top crust.
  7. Bake at 425°F for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35 to 45 minutes until the crust is golden and apples are tender.
  8. Cool for at least 2 hours before serving to allow juices to thicken.

Notes

  • If the crust edges brown too quickly, cover them with aluminum foil strips during the last 20 minutes of baking.
  • For the best texture, use a mix of sweet and tart apples.
  • Letting the pie cool completely is essential for clean slices.
