Grandma’s Chocolate Pie: A Rich Classic Recipe.

A rich, velvety, and nostalgic dessert featuring a smooth chocolate custard filling in a buttery pre-baked crust, just like Grandma used to make.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pre-baked 9-inch pie crust
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 3/4 cups whole milk
  • 3 large egg yolks, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream, for serving (optional)
  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and bake the pie crust according to package instructions until golden brown; set aside to cool.
  2. In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt.
  3. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking constantly to ensure a smooth consistency.
  4. Place the saucepan over medium heat, whisking constantly until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble (about 5-7 minutes). Remove from heat.
  5. Temper the eggs by slowly whisking a small amount of the hot mixture into the beaten egg yolks, then pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan.
  6. Return to heat and cook for 2-3 minutes while stirring until further thickened.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth.
  8. Pour the filling into the pre-baked crust and smooth the top.
  9. Cool at room temperature for 30 minutes, then cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours until set.
  10. Serve with whipped cream and chocolate shavings if desired.

Notes

  • To prevent a skin from forming on the custard, place plastic wrap directly on the surface of the filling while chilling.
  • Ensure you temper the yolks slowly to avoid scrambling the eggs.
  • Whole milk is recommended for the richest texture.
