Tomato Basil Mozzarella Salad: Easy 10-Minute Recipe

A classic Italian Caprese salad featuring ripe tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and fragrant basil, drizzled with a simple balsamic vinaigrette. This refreshing 10-minute dish is perfect as an appetizer or a light side.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ripe tomatoes, sliced into 1/4 inch rounds
  • 8 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
  • Fresh basil sprigs, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the tomatoes and slice them into rounds about 1/4 inch thick. Arrange them on a serving platter.
  2. Slice the fresh mozzarella into rounds of similar thickness. Layer the mozzarella slices on top of or alternating with the tomato slices.
  3. Scatter the fresh basil leaves (whole or torn) generously over the tomatoes and cheese.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the extra-virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and dried oregano (if using). Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Drizzle the dressing evenly over the salad.
  6. Let the salad sit for 10 minutes at room temperature to allow the flavors to meld before serving. Garnish with extra basil sprigs if desired.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, use room temperature tomatoes rather than cold ones.
  • High-quality extra-virgin olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar make a significant difference in taste.
  • If you prefer a thicker consistency, you can use a balsamic glaze instead of balsamic vinegar.
