Classic Broccoli Salad

A crunchy and savory crowd favorite that combines fresh broccoli florets with smoky bacon and a creamy sweet dressing for the perfect side dish.

Ingredients
  

  • 6 cups fresh broccoli florets cut into bite sized pieces
  • ½ cup red onion finely diced
  • ½ cup raisins or dried cranberries
  • ½ cup sunflower seeds or slivered almonds
  • ½ cup cooked bacon crumbled
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Method
 

  1. Place the chopped broccoli florets into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add the diced red onion raisins sunflower seeds crumbled bacon and shredded cheddar cheese to the broccoli.
  3. Whisk together the mayonnaise apple cider vinegar sugar salt and pepper in a small bowl until the dressing is smooth.
  4. Pour the dressing over the broccoli mixture in the large bowl.
  5. Toss all the ingredients together thoroughly until the broccoli is evenly coated with the dressing.
  6. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the salad for at least one hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
  7. Stir the salad once more just before serving to redistribute the dressing.

Notes

For the best texture and flavor ensure the broccoli is completely dry after washing before adding the dressing.
If you prefer a lighter version you can substitute half of the mayonnaise with Greek yogurt.
To keep the bacon and seeds extra crunchy you can wait to stir them in until right before you serve the salad.
This salad is an excellent make ahead option as it tastes even better after chilling in the refrigerator for several hours.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days.
