Meaty Deep-Dish Pizza Pie

Meaty Deep-Dish Pizza Pie

This hearty deep-dish pizza is built like a savory pie with a thick buttery crust and layers of rich marinara. It is loaded with a trio of savory meats and gooey melted mozzarella for an authentic Chicago-style comfort meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound pizza dough at room temperature
  • ½ pound ground Italian sausage
  • ½ cup sliced pepperoni
  • ½ cup cooked bacon crumbles
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup chunky marinara sauce
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Equipment

  • 9-inch springform pan or deep-dish pizza pan
  • Large Skillet
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Pastry Brush
  • Wooden spoon

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a deep-dish pizza pan with olive oil.
  2. Place the ground Italian sausage in a large skillet over medium heat and cook until fully browned.
  3. Drain the excess grease from the skillet and set the cooked sausage aside on a paper towel-lined plate.
  4. Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface until it is large enough to cover the bottom and sides of your pan.
  5. Press the dough firmly into the pan ensuring it reaches at least two inches up the side walls.
  6. Sprinkle half of the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the bottom of the raw dough crust.
  7. Layer the cooked Italian sausage and the bacon crumbles over the first layer of cheese.
  8. Add the remaining mozzarella cheese and the sliced pepperoni on top of the other meats.
  9. Spread the chunky marinara sauce carefully over the top of the cheese and meat layers.
  10. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese dried oregano and garlic powder over the surface of the sauce.
  11. Brush the exposed edges of the pizza crust with a small amount of olive oil for a golden finish.
  12. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling hot.
  13. Let the pizza pie rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing to allow the deep layers to set.

Notes

Using a springform pan makes it much easier to remove the deep-dish pizza without breaking the tall crust walls.
If your marinara sauce is very thin you can simmer it for a few minutes to thicken it before adding it to the pie.
Be sure to pre-cook all of your meats thoroughly as the baking time is mainly for the dough and melting the cheese.
You can add sautéed mushrooms or green peppers to the meat layers for additional texture and flavor variety.
